Workshops/Clinics

Great River Vineyard offers "How To" clinics during the off season.  These clinics developed from the many inquiries we received regarding basic pruning techniques.  We saw the need for hands on pruning instruction and began offering annual spring pruning workshops during the month of April.  Since we hold attendance to 25 participants to ensure personal attention, we soon found the need to have 2 clinics every spring.  These clinics are normally held the first 2 Saturdays in April.

We soon discovered that many of the questions asked during the pruning clinics had nothing to do with pruning.  As a result, we decided that there was a need for information for the beginning grape grower.  After much thought, we put together our "Grape Growing 101", the Basics of Cold Climate Grape Growing, seminar.  An annual all day event that covers site selection, planting, soil preparation, trellising, etc.  It has become a popular annual event with attendees from the all over the mid west, Maine to Montana, Canada, etc.

Again, the idea grew.  Many of the participants of the first "101" seminars were attending more than once, looking for more than we offered at "101".  As a result, we began to develop our "Grape Growing 201" seminar.  This covered more advanced knowledge for the northern grower.  This has not been an annual event but we are planning one this winter:  February 25, 2006.  Watch our website for more information.

Summer of 2006 marks another new project!  We hope to offer a "Field Day with Richard Smart", of Australia, author of "Sunlight into Wine" and world famous viticultural consultant.  We are delighted that Mr. Smart has expressed a willingness to visit Minnesota and share his cutting edge theories on canopy management and trellising, to a new audience of grape growers.

Great River Vineyard plans to expand these workshops to include planting, site selection and preparation, variety selection, spraying, trellising, planting, etc. - all the basics for the novice cold climate grape grower.
